Summer Glow equals Sun Tanning No-No

Do you ever have one of those days where the "blahs" catch up to you and just do a number on your being?! I am at that point today, and I am trying desperately to get out of this funk. I was searching for some inspiration to post about, but no such luck. Instead, I am going to be a bad blogger and re-post something I wrote on a personal blog that I had for a while. Regular blogging to resume tomorrow.

May 29, 2009

Newsflash: I don't care who you are- if you are still going to tanning beds or putting baby oil on your beautiful delicate skin for a day at the beach just to look like Donatella version 2.0 then you need to Google two words: skin cancer (go ahead, click! Courteous, right?)!

I totally get the need, actually dire need, for the glow. I was a victim of tanning beds and beaches alike for 5 years during my invincible days, and I must admit it was totally worth being tan at prom to now have a lifetime of skin discoloration that requires me to see my dermatologist every two weeks. NOT! If I could pull out a "do-over" card in life, it would be to steer clear of tanning booths and dangerous beach days where I avoided sunscreen like the plague!

Let's all be honest, it's only natural to feel self-conscious about exposing your neglected, ashy, sometimes bluish/purplish (just me?) arms and legs after keeping them in a cave of layers for 8 months during the winter! If you simply can't handle your skin looking like the gorgeous, yet porcelain, Kate Winslet or Nicole Kidman, then you must, I repeat, must save your skin by finding alternative products.

Simple to use, healthy products, like Jergens Natural Glow and Bare Minerals A Little Sun All-Over are completely safe to use on your skin and won't break the bank like tanning packages will. Best of all, products like Jergens are gradual tanners, thus leaving you less apt to look like a giant Cheeto and more like the leading, glowing lady that you are! Skin cancer, wrinkles, and discoloration do not discriminate- they will find you any way that they can! Please, please, please think before you tan!

Cray-zay Wallpaper

First and foremost: I want to say a huge thank you to Jacqueline at Alluring Interiors for featuring me in her series entitled 'In Her Shoes' and Aera at Delecatable Swank for interviewing me last week and featuring Brunch at Saks as her 'blog of the week'. You can read them here and here, but more importantly, if you haven't checked out their blogs before, be sure to look around- they are fabulous! Thank you again!

I've blogged about wallpaper before, and how I am always hesitant to take the plunge in plastering my walls with such decor, but lately I cannot get enough of all the crazy wallpaper patterns that keep popping up in magazines, HGTV shows, etc. Here are some of my current faves:

I love the chocolate brown and blue, although I'm afraid my boyfriend will think I fell off my rocker if I did an entire room like that! What do you think- too much or not enough?!

Monday Motivation: Office Space Style

Raise your hand if you love going back to work/school on Monday mornings! Anyone...anyone? Bueller...Bueller?! (Sorry, love my 80's movies, ha!)

Anyhow, after a little browsing for some Monday motivation, I found something that is sure to get your week going on the right foot! Take a look at this fan-tab-u-lous office of an architectural firm in Spain! It is quite possibly the coolest space I have ever seen!

(Photos Selgas via Max Wanger)

Ahh...love it! I must admit, sometimes when I am in confined spaces like this I go into major claustrophobic-mode, so I am not sure how well my creative juices would flow in there, but I'd love to try!

What do you think?! Fully work-able or complete claustrophobia?

A Little Gift for You

Yesterday I received a wonderful package in the mail filled with little goodies from the lovely Maegan at A Little Twig Birdhouse (head over there if you haven't already- you will love her!). The reason for the gifts you ask?! Last week Maegan hosted a blog gift exchange entitled Pay It Forward which was so much fun to be a part of! During times like these, I think it is especially nice to be able to brighten someone's day, even if it is just a small something!

I am so excited to continue this exchange by "paying it forward" and sharing some really fun little gifts I bought for three of you!

Here's how to play:
1) I have little gifts ready to send out to the first 3 people who comment on here (please put your email in the comment if you don't have it posted on your blog OR email me your address).
2) You must be willing to play along when you get your gift and host a Pay It Forward on your blog {receive a gift, give a gift} !
3) The gifts can be handmade or store bought- it is the thought that counts!

*Thank you Maegan for the lovely gifts and hosting such a fun gift exchange!*

Happy Weekend plus Things Not to Do

TGIF! This week seemed to fly by- thank goodness! I'd love to write that I was going to do something exciting this weekend, but that just isn't the case! So to spare you from my boring routine, I decided to follow in the fabulous footsteps of Nicole at La Mia Vita who did an adorable post about things NOT to do while in her town of San Francisco. Check it out if you haven't already- you'll love her! Since I know the excitement is just killing you (ha!) here are are my top no-no's while visiting the fabulous city that I call home: Los Angeles.

Things NOT to do in Los Angeles

1. LAX Bound: Flying into LAX may seem exciting (especially if you're into pesty paparazzi trying to snap the Beckhams who are inevitably around the corner) but try to avoid it if possible! Save time and luggage hassles by flying into smaller airports like Burbank, Santa Monica, and Long Beach. You'll be in and out in no time!

2. I must admit, I always feel horrible for tourists who go to Hollywood in hopes of seeing all the "glitz and glamour." Trust me, may-jah disappointment. If you want to see where/ how the 'stars' live, head west on Sunset for a few miles until you see the famous Welcome to Beverly Hills crest. Now we're talkin....!

3. Speaking of Beverly Hills, if you are in maximum tourist mode and want to "oooh" and "ahh" over the ginormous houses, grab a $5 star map and turn it into a fun adventure for you and your friends! This way you'll be able to stop at the celebrity houses of your choice and you'll be able to get out and snap pics whenever/wherever you want.

4. If you watch The Hills and want to live out your inner LC at the likes of Area, Social, and Le Deux, be prepared to possibly get denied entry (if they do it to Diddy and Paris anyone is game)! There are tons of less crowded lounges around Hollywood (check hotels like The Roosevelt and The Sunset Tower Hotel) that will have you just as satisfied, promise!

5. Traffic jam: If it's between 4p and 7p on any given weekday, be sure to avoid the 5, 10, 405, and 101. These are essential for commuters, but if you are just visiting, try canyon roads like Laurel, Cold Water, and Topanga, that can take you from the valley to Hollywood or the beach (or vice versa) in a lot less time. That being said, you will incur traffic here, so just connect your iPod or listen to Ryan Seacrest on KIISFM. You'll get there eventually!

6. Dinner Reservations: While Spago, Nobu, Dolce, and Mr. Chow are all fabulous eats, look for smaller and more quaint restaurants like Joans on Third, Charcoal, or Sushi Dan for a just as fun and yummy experience! Your wallet will thank you!

7. Beach Bum: The Santa Monica Pier and its complimenting beach are lovely, but they're just too crowded! Take the PCH north a few miles to a beach like Zuma (Malibu) for a much quieter and relaxing time.

8. If you are going somewhere that offers valet parking, do not pass them up on their offer. Most places actually valet for 2-3 hours free with validation- which is a lot less than it will cost you to pay and walk yourself!

9. Shopping on Rodeo is one of the best experiences in all of LA, but let's be honest, who can afford the $5K cropped blazer hanging in Versace's window display?! Take a stroll down Rodeo (do the whole pic thing in front of Chanel, Gucci, etc.) and then walk one block east to Beverly Dr. It is just as lovely as Rodeo, but houses stores like Anthropolgie and smaller boutiques that won't break the bank. It's a win win!

Well that was fun! If you have time this weekend or next week, I invite you to post the top things not to do in your town! I'd love to read everyone's lists- I think it'd be fun! Be sure to let me know if you do so!

On to the good stuff: what are you up to this weekend?! Any plans?! Have a great time relaxing and spending time with your loved ones, fur babies, friends, etc!

Interiors Porfolio: Trine Thorsen

I love this interiors portfolio by amazing Norwegian photographer, Trine Thorsen. I seriously want to live in every single one of her images! They all have an elegant yet subtle glow that make them so unique and inviting! Enjoy!

Love.

Chic Boutique Hotels

Staying in chain hotels can always be a safe bet while traveling, but sometimes they lack personal attention to detail and care, which can leave you with a less-than-stellar experience to add to your travel tales. After a couple sketchy hotel experiences in the past few years at chain hotels, I decided that I wanted to start giving boutique hotels a try. Here are some of my favorite smaller boutique hotels that are loaded with chic and glamorous decor!

The Hempel- London, United Kingdom

Mosaic Hotel- Beverly Hills, Calif

Hotel Astor- South Beach- Miami, Fl

I've never stayed at any of the above, but I am adding them to my travel wish list right now! Have you ever stayed in a really chic hotel that you just couldn't get enough of?! I'd love to hear!
